Entry 003
The Answer to Brining, the Universe & Everything
After seven and a half million minutes of continuous fermentation, the great brine computer produced its answer to the Ultimate Question of pickling, the universe, and everything. The answer was 42.
It declined to specify forty-two what. Forty-two minutes of rest? Forty-two grams of salt per litre? Forty-two cloves of garlic, which would be excessive even for Entry 011? The computer maintained, to its final processor cycle, that the question had simply not been precise enough — a complaint every brine maker eventually learns to respect.
BRINEBOT-7: "I asked it to clarify. It asked me to define 'pickle.' We did not speak again."
1 Footnotes within this Guide are also numbered up to 42, then they stop, out of principle.
